Real Estate — A new assessment of an established sector
Separate from Financials at last. Starting 2019, Real Estate will be placed in its own Industry group within the Industry Classification Benchmark (ICB). Real estate as its own industry — consistent with the unique characteristics of listed Real Estate equity — solidifies market sentiment around its historical placement. But whatever its classification, FTSE Russell has long understood the importance of this segment to investors, and has been working for decades with established industry associations to develop meaningful measurement of the market.

Merry month of May sees US Equity REITs outpace the Russell 3000 Index

Following a volatile start to 2018, May was indeed a merry month for US equity REITs. The Fed took a break from raising the federal funds target rate in May, and the FTSE Nareit Equity REITs Index posted a total return of 3.95% in May 2018, making for an excess return of 1.13% over the broad US equity market, as represented by the Russell 3000 Index.
